Many of the long distance bike routes, like the Front Royal VA Skyline Drive Bike, start in one area of the Shenandoah Valley and take you on a tour of the area, jutting in and out of quaint towns like Luray Virginia.
Whether your group is looking for low graded trails for the whole family or experienced, expert level biking trails in the woods or along
Skyline Drive,
Luray Virginia has numerous VA Mountain Biking guides
and outfitters to tailor fit you with gear and tips on
the best trails. Below, we have compiled a few of our
favorite Bike Trails In Virginia close to our Shenandoah
Valley Lodging.
Luray Classic
Known as the Luray Classic, one of the most popular, scenic, and thrilling Shenandoah Valley Bike routes starts in Front Royal Virginia and traverses south 30
miles down Skyline Drive into Luray Virginia. Luray VA is the halfway point on this 83-mile round trip loop. Cyclists can choose to head back to Front Royal from Luray or continue the second half of the route up Massanutten Mountain, completing the loop with a section in the
George Washington National Forest and ending back in Front Royal. This trail is for the experienced cyclist but provides the best comprehensive route and scenery in a near perfect loop trail. Looking for something a little bit shorter? Try the Three peak Challenge, through Thornton Gap, Ft Valley, and New Market.
A variation of this route is Shenandoah Valley-Skyline Drive Classic. This VA Mountain Biking trial starts in Luray Virginia, less than 1 mile from the
Luray Caverns
Virginia at the Mimslyn Inn. This 72-mile ride can be broken up into segments, but the most difficult part of the ride is the 4.7-mile climb on Route 211 from Luray, at 400 feet, to Skyline Drive, at 2,300 feet. After this initial blood-pumping run, you will continue through the Shenandoah Valley and northernmost third of Skyline Drive, looping back on Route 340 from Front Royal back to Luray. Be aware that traffic will be heavy on Route 211, Route 340 and Skyline Drive during fall weekends.
Waterfall Mountain
These Bike Trails In Virginia start just east of the Jamesway Shopping Center on Route 211. For a total of 12 miles, this mountain biking trek is full of downhill rock scrambles, smooth single track and steep sections for a well-rounded and exciting ride. Highlights on this trip are the forest streams, dynamic terrain, boulder fields, excellent views and the exciting single track. If you are looking for a screamer of a VA Mountain Biking ride, this is the trail for you.
Duncan Hollow
Just 8 miles north of Luray on Route 675 mountain bikes will find an 11.7 mile loop trail. The ride begins smooth and then makes a rocky climb through Duncan Hollow. After smoothing out at Middle Mountain, where a spectacular view awaits you, the trial yields to a screaming downhill descent ends with a forest road cruise. Be on the look out for horses as this trail is shared by VA Horseback Riding groups. Duncan Hollow is not necessarily a single track route but offers intermediate riders plenty of stream crossings, views and boulder fields.
Our region also hosts the Annual Shenandoah Valley
Century each September. Participants choose a 25, 50 or 100 mile ride though the Shenandoah Valley at their own pace and are provided with maps and patrolled routes for the perfect Shenandoah Valley Bike experience.
